Long Thành International Airport – A Milestone in Vietnam’s Aviation Infrastructure
After five years of relentless construction, Long Thành International Airport welcomed its first three technical flights on 19‑12‑2025, marking Vietnam’s bold step toward global connectivity.

From Rubber Plantations to a World‑Class Hub
The 5,000‑hectare site once covered by rubber trees has been transformed into a regional gateway that will serve the Southern economic zone, Đồng Nai province and the whole nation.
Key Milestones and Investment Highlights
- Resolution No. 94/2015/QH13 approved by the National Assembly on 25‑06‑2015, officially green‑lighting the project.
- Prime Minister’s decision (Nov 2018) delegated land‑acquisition responsibilities to Đồng Nai, covering over 5,000 ha – the largest resettlement effort in the country.
- Phase 1 total investment: approximately VND 110 trillion, including a 25 million‑passenger‑per‑year terminal, a 4F runway and a state‑of‑the‑art ATC tower.
- Construction peak: ~15,000 workers and 3,000 pieces of machinery operating in three‑shift, four‑crew mode.
People‑Centred Relocation and Resettlement
More than 28,000 residents were relocated to new towns such as Lộc An‑Bình Sơn (280 ha) equipped with roads, electricity, water, schools and health facilities. Local resident Nguyễn Thị Mỹ Ngọc said, “We are proud that our land hosts a national‑scale project, and we gladly moved to help its progress.”
Operational Readiness and Future Capacity
On 19‑12‑2025 the airport successfully received three technical test flights, confirming runway certification and ATC system functionality. Commercial operations are slated for early 2026, with an initial capacity of 25 million passengers per year.
Long‑term master plan projects a capacity of 100 million passengers annually by 2050, positioning Long Thành as one of Southeast Asia’s biggest air hubs.
Strategic Linkages and Economic Impact
Complementary infrastructure – the Biên Hòa‑Vũng Tàu expressway, Bến Lức‑Long Thành road, Ring Road 3 and the Ho Chi Minh‑Long Thành‑Dầu Giây highway upgrade – will integrate the airport into a multimodal logistics corridor.
The airport is expected to divert traffic from Tan Sơn Nhat, generate tens of thousands of new jobs, stimulate the aviation ecosystem and elevate Đồng Nai’s role in the Southern Key Economic Zone.
Governance and Quality Assurance
High‑level inspections by the Party’s Central Committee and the Prime Minister have reinforced a “zero‑defect” policy. The provincial Steering Committee continuously resolves bottlenecks, ensuring that safety, quality and timeline commitments are met.
Long Thành Airport is not just a construction achievement; it is Vietnam’s statement of intent to compete on the global aviation stage.
